Doha, Qatar (April 21, 2009) -- Al Shaqab Riding Academy recognized members of the Emiri Guard Equestrian Unit for completing the Basic Riding and Training Program in a special awards ceremony Tuesday.
The twenty-five honorees successfully completed the course, learning basic horsemanship and riding skills, stable management and horse and rider relationships. The course spanned a 13-week period from Feb. 1 - April 20, 2009, at the Al Shaqab Riding Academy and the Aspire Zone Stables.
"Part of our plan is to continue to develop the riders to be trainers and stable managers for the future when we have our own arenas and equestrian facilities," said Major Hitme Al Hitme, Direct Supervisor of Riding for the Emiri Guard. "We will build off this wonderful experience and continue to coordinate with Al Shaqab in the future. "
"This is a proud event for Al Shaqab as we continue to develop and promote the tradition of horsemanship in Qatar," said Claudia Starr, Director of Al Shaqab. "These riders represent the link between the past and future of Qatar's equestrian efforts. They ride with honor and prestige as Emiri Guards. Al Shaqab is pleased to have assisted in their training as these 25 riders go forth to represent the legacy of horsemanship that is so beloved in Qatar."
The program was supported by HE Sheikh Mohammed Bin Hamad Al-Thani, Emiri Guard Staff Colonel Hazza Mansour Khalil Al Shahwani, Chairman of the National Day Committee Salah Ghanem Al- Ali, Technical Advisor Terry Delavaud and Head Instructor Zayid Al Hashmi.
"We didn't realize that this sport is difficult, but with the support of the Al Shaqab Riding Academy and their instructors we have taken a step in the right direction for the guards," said Major Hitme Al Hitme. "Without Al Shaqab, the guards would have never achieved these results."
